Your refrigerator is likely one of the biggest consumers of energy in your house. To keep it running efficiently make sure

  • Seals are clean tight
  • The proper temperature is set at 37-40 degrees F & 0-5 degrees F in the freezer

Beat the Heat

The third largest energy expense is typically your water heater & if you like your water hot hot hot, then your system is working hard to keep up. Keep it cool by doing the following:

  • Set your water heater temperature to 120 degrees
  • Make sure your tank is properly insulated
  • How about a shower vs. a bath?
  • Turn off your hot water & your water heater when you don’t need it

Your heating and cooling systems are about 30-50 percent of your electric bill, so it makes sense to address ways to reduce the stress to them

  • Keep air filters clean. Schedule a cleaning and tune up yearly
  • Make sure indoor vents & outdoor systems are free from debris
  • Make sure you don’t have ductwork leaks
  • Set that thermostat to 85 degrees when you’re out or install a programmable thermostat
